New recycling collections could soon be introduced in St Ives after a pilot scheme in the town centre highlighted a strong demand for the service.

The issue of recycling is seen as a key priority for the popular West Cornwall town, with businesses, local people and visitors all asking for regular collections to be brought in.

St Ives Business Improvement District (BID) supported calls from local firms to launch recycling collections and discussed the possible introduction of a new service in the town with local MP Derek Thomas and H&A Recycling.

Carl Lamb, St Ives BID Manager, said:

“Feedback from businesses, visitors and local people has shown that recycling is an important issue in the town and one that we are keen to support.

“Our recent pilot scheme showed that the bins provided to us were not suitable for the purpose we had hoped and unfortunately were filled with general rubbish as well as recycling so we were advised by Cornwall Council to remove them.

“We were of course disappointed but this has allowed us to highlight to Cornwall Council just how important an issue it is in St Ives. On the back of this we have been able to secure a meeting with senior council officers to meet us in the town to discuss how we can introduce and improve recycling and rubbish collections.”

Carl added that the meeting with the local authority is due to take place in September.
